Star Wars Ep. III: Revenge of the Sith (Williams, 2005)

Star Wars Ep. I:
The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Ep. II:
Attack of the Clones
Star Wars Ep. III:
Revenge of the Sith

The final entry of the Star Wars "prequel" trilogy was again scored by John Williams, naturally, and in this film the composer found himself in the historically-unique position of having to sum up themes from two preceding films and also create a bridge to the original trilogy's musical material (and of course providing fresh new themes as well).  Not only that, but since this was to be the "final" Star Wars film (at least with the participation of its original author, George Lucas), Williams had to provide a fitting climax to the entire series.  In any case, Williams delivered once again, with the help of the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Voices choral group (as well as orchestrators Eddie Karam and Conrad Pope).

In the tradition of Star Wars soundtracks, Williams composed and recorded the score to Revenge of the Sith with the understanding that some cues would be altered or dropped or even repositioned.  Beside the newly composed music, the film also makes use of a few previously-used cues such as "Escape from Naboo", "Duel of the Fates", "The Droid Invasion" (TPM) and "The Arena" (AOTC).  The soundtrack as usual is assembled as suites from various new cues both used and unused in the final film.  The table below describes the intended sequences for each cue used to create the soundtrack suites.

In Revenge of the Sith, Williams created several new themes and sub-themes, but the two which surface the most are the  "Battle of the Heroes" theme and General Grievous' theme:

  • Battle of the Heroes: tragically-heroic, choral.
  • Grievous theme: martial, motoric and swirling themes.
  • Sith theme: occurs mainly in "Anakin's Dark Deeds" and is derived from Grievous' B string theme.
  • Escape theme: rhythmic motif, used a few times in the 1st act space rescue.
  • Utapau "motoric": rhythm in 7/8, also could be considered a varactyl (giant lizard)-riding theme.

Beside the new themes, the returning themes include ones for the Force, Darth Vader (Imperial March), the Emperor, the Love theme from "Attack of the Clones", Qui-Gon's funeral theme, and various other brief quotes.  The last track essentially bridges back to Episode IV: A New Hope with Leia's theme and the Throne Room theme especially featured.

Star Wars Ep. II: Attack of the Clones (Williams, 2002)

Star Wars Ep. I:
The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Ep. II:
Attack of the Clones
Star Wars Ep. III:
Revenge of the Sith

2002 saw the release of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, a direct sequel to Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and followed in turn by Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.  John Williams' 5th entry in the Star Wars series is highlighted by a soaring love theme ("Across the Stars") and an epic-length chase cue through the skies of Coruscant, driven by various percussion textures.  On the soundtrack, the Coruscant chase cue is extended with percussion cadenzas and features added electric guitar.  For Star Wars fans of old, one of the most exciting elements is the final cue in which Darth Vader's theme (the Imperial March) makes a full and gloriously sinister appearance.

Like all of the Star Wars soundtracks before it, this one was also made up of musical suites of cues designed to create a kind of "home concert program", with the dynamic elements spread around.  The film itself often used edited versions or alternate takes of the original cues.  It also drew heavily from retracked action cues originally recorded for The Phantom Menace, especially in the final Battle of Geonosis (Trade Federation March, The Battle Rages On, Droid Army Attack motif, Attack of the Giant Fish, Escape from Naboo, The Queen & Group Land On Naboo, etc).  Besides the themes returning from the previous 4 films (Luke, the Force, Yoda, Vader, the Emperor, Duel of the Fates, the Trade Federation March, Anakin's theme), Williams added several new themes, with the Love theme being the most developed.

  • Love theme ("Across the Stars"): a soaring and romantic theme which rises and falls earnestly, but has additional sub-themes which are melancholy and dark.
  • Meadow theme: lilting rhythm with high figures, innocent and pastoral.
  • Dooku motif: sinister motif, slow and brooding (occurs much more in the actual film than the soundtrack).
  • Kamino fanfare and theme: a fanfare followed by broad swaying figures and harp sweeps.
  • Dilemma ostinato: arpeggio motif, mysterious and irresistibly hypnotic.

Star Wars Ep. I: The Phantom Menace (Williams, 1999)

Star Wars Ep. I:
The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Ep. II:
Attack of the Clones
Star Wars Ep. III:
Revenge of the Sith

In 1999, 16 years after 1983's Return of the Jedi, John Williams returned to score and conduct the 4th entry of the Star Wars saga, "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace".  As with the original trilogy, the score was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, with the main choral elements sung by the London Voices.  Due to the heavy political nature of some of the plot elements in this "prequel trilogy", the scores for Episodes I to III tend to have some long stretches of relatively subdued dynamics.  However, when the action kicks in, the music often soars to great heights, matching some of the classic moments from the original trilogy.

Since this trilogy takes place before the introduction of the main characters of Episode IV: A New Hope, the only themes from the original trilogy which are revisited in any real way are the Force theme (Ben Kenobi's theme) and the Emperor's theme (though Luke's theme naturally appears in the main title and in a few places as brief motifs).  Naturally, Williams created several new themes to portray this "age of the Old Republic", and these are listed below.  One of the key new themes, Anakin's theme, also contains elements of Vader's theme (appropriately enough), although as a very subtle ending fragment.
  • Anakin's theme: innocent rising melody, with hints of melancholy, and sometimes ending with a Vader theme fragment.
  • Qui-Gon's theme: determined melody, somewhat martial or "knightly".
  • Duel of the Fates: a choral action theme built on a Fate ostinato, with the main Duel melody on brass.  The chorus sings a slow text (Welsh lyrics sung in Sanskrit), but a 2nd chorus also appears as staccato accents.
  • Trade Federation March: an ominous brass and percussion march.
  • Jar Jar's theme: a lyrical theme in the tradition of the "little people" themes from the original trilogy.
  • Shmi's theme: a dramatic theme with a fateful atmosphere.
  • Sith Chant and Darth Maul's motif: whispered textures and taiko drum (?) textures.
  • Taking Off motif: a rising melody, heroic yet playful.
  • Droid Army Attack motif: rhythmic figure in brass and percussion with lots of martial elements.
  • Flag Parade: this only occurs once in the film so it's not really a "theme", but it does have its own concert arrangement.
A couple other various textures are paired with certain situations, such as female choir for the underwater scenes, synthetic choir textures for the Jedi Council setting, recorder for "political discussion" scenes, and Panaka's action theme featured in the final battle (or at least it was, until it was replaced with Duel of the Fates...).

As is customary with Star Wars soundtracks, an "official score" was released containing edited suites of cues collected from the original recording sessions (sometimes using alternate takes), as well as a couple of unique concert suite versions of themes not meant to be used as film underscore.  The concert suite for "Duel of the Fates" proved to be so effective that director George Lucas and his music editor Kenneth Wannberg ended up replacing portions of Williams' intended music for the final battle with fragments of this concert suite (apparently the final film was re-edited several times and so Williams' music was similarly shuffled around to fit).  Additionally, Williams' score for the end of the Tatooine pod race was replaced with the music used for the escape from Naboo (retracked).  Fortunately much of Williams' unused/replaced music is still available on the official soundtrack.

In 2000, an "Ultimate Edition" soundtrack was assembled, which was designed to approximate the music used in the final film - something like an isolated score, but assembled after the fact.  This release included almost all of the music with just some very minor exclusions, although alternate takes were sometimes used instead of the ones used in the film.  This release also includes some fascinating "indigenous Tatooine music", composed by Williams' son Josepth.
